Through The Looking Glass’ Top 11 Posts of 2016

ttlg-top-posts-2016

Everyone loves end-of-year posts, right? Especially when they come, not at the end of the old year, but at the start of a new one!

So with my trademark lateness (and wish me luck with last year’s best dessert list hitting the blog before the end of 2017), here are TTLG’s most read posts of 2016:

1. Australia’s Next Top Model, Cycle 7
2. Hong Kong Murders: The Braemar Hill murders
3. Arcane restaurant review
4. The Intercontinental Hong Kong afternoon tea review
5. SK-II Facial Treatment Essence review
6. Skin Laundry facial review
7. Clinique Chubby Sticks in Two Ton Tomato, Mighty Mimosa & Pudgy Peony review
8. Mott 32 restaurant review
9. Lancome Blanc Expert Ultimate Whitening Hydrating Cream moisturiser review
10. Australia’s Next Top Model, Cycle 4
11.  Top 5 Desserts in Hong Kong 2015

It seems the key to being a popular post on my blog is to be an article written several years ago! Anyway, thanks as ever for reading and here’s hoping 2017 is a great year for us all.

Food love – Mochachocolatarita’s cute Valentine’s foodie illustrations

hong kong valentine's xiao long bao

I’m not one for Valentine’s Day AT ALL… but when I saw these cute and fun V-Day foodie illustrations by my fabulous blogger friend, Mochachocolatarita (try saying that when you’ve had a few!), I knew I just had to share!

hong kong valentine's boloh bao

Rita has taken some much-loved matches-made-in-HK-food-heaven and turned them into very sweet, loved-up illustrations for Valentine’s Day. Forget cheesy giant teddy bears and half-dead bouquets of flowers… these pictures are much more fun!

Oh, I say! Penhaligon’s guides to life…

penhaligon's guide to gentlemanly behaviour

I swear I’m not obsessed with them… OK, OK, maybe I am… but I am loving these cute postcards from British fragrance brand, Penhaligon’s!

Their Guides to Gentlemanly Behaviour and British Tea Drinking Etiquette are quirky, witty and fun; I’m a sucker for anything done in this vintage-style, which totally fits the heritage of their brand (over 100 years and counting, baby!).

rachttlg best of 2013

I love reading lists. I especially love reading end-of-year lists. But wait… a thought just struck me… instead of just reading everyone else’s best of lists, I could actually make my own!

So here are the Top 11 Posts of 2013 on Through The Looking Glass – according to the stats, like. (And the stats don’t lie, Shakira Shakira).

1.  Barbie – still the Best
2.  Don’t wake me up… Nostalgia, 90s TV show reunions and feeling old
3.  Hong Kong Murders: The Braemar Hill murders
4.  Clinique Chubby Sticks in Two Ton Tomato, Mighty Mimosa & Pudgy Peony review
5.  SK-II Facial Treatment Essence review

Interview with Charlotte Knight, founder of Ciate

ciate charlotte knight hong kong

As part of my day job as Editor for a lifestyle website, I often get the opportunity to interview people – however, I’m not quite Ryan Seacrest yet so half the time, I don’t even know who half these people are! However, when the email came asking if I wanted to interview Charlotte Knight, the founder of Ciaté who was in town for Lane Crawford’s Vogue Fashion’s Night Out, I jumped at the chance!

I found Charlotte really likeable, fun and down-to-earth – and I loved how heavily involved in Ciaté she still is. I could really tell how passionate she is about nails, which as a customer, is something I really value in a brand. Since I put myself through the hell of listening to my voice over and over again to transcribe our 30-minute chat, I thought I might as well stick up the whole interview on here for all you fellow polishaholics! Enjoy!

Freeing HK review – free is the magic number!

freeing hk group shot

*NOTE: I’ve since been to LOST Hong Kong and it is loads better – I’d definitely recommend it over Freeing!*

“Can anybody see the crystal?”

Hands up if your formative years involved lots of screaming at the telly while watching The Crystal Maze? Well, if it did, perhaps like me, one of your lifelong ambitions might have been to be a contestant on The Crystal Maze (when Richard O’ Brien was hosting, obviously, not that funny Ed bloke that came after), get locked in rooms and use your smarts to figure out how to get out.

Sadly, The Crystal Maze ended almost 20 years ago (God, I’m old!) so there’s zero chance of me actually achieving that dream. However, I may have just found the next best thing to help me live out my 90s gameshow fantasies – Freeing HK.

As If! The best fashion lookbook ever

WILDFOX_SPRING_13_CLUELESS-42Sex. Clothes. Popularity. Whatever.

I’ll admit to not being the most stylish cat in town… but I am like, totally buggin’, because something amazing has happened. Something I am actually obsessed with has become fashionable!

Yes, apparently Clueless – one of my favourite films ever, re-watched religiously every few months [Boyfriend: Didn’t we just watch Clueless like… last week?], the script of which is committed to memory ‘as if’ I learnt it in Sunday school – is currently the hottest style inspiration for designers. Short of the catwalks being inspired by the wardrobes of Disney princesses or Jem & The Holograms, I am likely to never be this en vogue ever again!

I Know That Feel Bro!

Got problems? I know that feel bro!

But no one illustrates shared problems quite as awesomely as artist Chris Gerringer.

Gerringer’s I Know That Feel Bro quirky series of illustrations takes fictional pop culture characters and draws them side-by-side, consoling each other in their shared misery.  A problem shared is a problem halved, right? And judging by his drawings, a lot more cute too!
