Chuan Tao of Detox treatment at Chuan Spa, Cordis Hong Kong review

Chuan Spa Cordis Hong Kong

When you think of Mong Kok, “relaxing oasis of calm” probably isn’t the first phrase that springs to mind; in fact, “crazy-intense shopping insanity that sets my teeth on edge the minute I arrive at the MTR station” is probably a lot more apt. But the second you step out of the crush and into Chuan Spa, the stress all just melts away.

Located in Cordis Hong Kong – the hotel formerly known as Langham Place Hong Kong – Chuan Spa is a pampering destination with a difference, being one of the only fancy hotel spas to concentrate more on traditional Chinese medicine. This manifests itself both in the décor, which is all dark wood, jade and Asian antique design touches – I loved the gorgeous medicine cabinet in the waiting room and the trickling water feature in the corridors between therapy rooms – and the treatments themselves, which have been designed to balance the traditional five elements of water, earth, fire, wood and metal.

Cordis Hong Kong Chuan Spa View

I was invited to try the Chuan Tao of Detox treatment, a bumper 150 minutes of pampering bliss. But before hitting the massage bed, there’s a short questionnaire to complete in the spa’s serene contemplation room – which boasts some pretty cool views over Kowloon to boot – to discover what element you most identify with, which in turn matches with one of five custom Chuan Spa oil blends. I did this, discovered my element then swiftly went off-piste to pick whichever one featured my beloved lavender instead (wood, by the way)!

Swan Lake On Ice by The Imperial Ice Stars @ Hong Kong Cultural Centre review

If you’ve ever found ballet a little bit (whisper it) boring, then have I got the show for you – Swan Lake On Ice.

Yep, if the average pointe work on solid ground never struck you as being quite challenging enough, the introduction of frozen water and blades about 4mm in thickness should do the trick nicely!

Joking aside, The Imperial Ice Stars’ production of Swan Lake On Ice is exactly the kind of show that the word “spectacle” was invented for. Taking Tchaikovsky’s original much-loved score and transferring the action to an ice rink is a move bound to outrage more than a few ballet purists – but when Odette (Olga Sharutenko) actually takes flight during the swooningly romantic dance between her and Prince Siegfried (Bogdan Berezenko), it feels like something straight out of a fairy tale.

The Illusionists @ Hong Kong Cultural Centre review – it’s a kind of magic

The Illusionists Hong Kong

Do you believe in magic?

These days, I’m not sure anyone over the age of 8 really does – and thankfully so if it means women no longer get burnt at the stake for crimes like being too old, too young or having a mole in the wrong place. But with a show like The Illusionists, it sure as hell is fun suspending your disbelief for two hours to live in a world where magic just might be a real thing.

Skin Laundry facial review – so fresh, so clean?

skin laundry hong kong

Think how easy it is to clean your clothes – stick them in the washing machine, job done. Now if only it could be that easy to clean your face… cue cleansing, toning, exfoliating, extracting and heaven knows what else. Well, that’s where the Skin Laundry comes in.

This high-tech beauty blitz is a laser and light facial that claims to get the job done in just 15 minutes. Having won rave reviews in the States, it’s now landed in Hong Kong with three bright and breezy locations – in Lan Kwai Fong, Lane Crawford in IFC and Repulse Bay – so I was curious to give it a go. Brighter, firmer, smoother skin with reduced pores and diminished lines in less time than it takes to pick my latest nail polish colour? Sign me up!

Kiko Milano Cosmetics opens in Hong Kong

kiko hong kong

UPDATE: Kiko has since opened loads more stores in Hong Kong – full list of locations at the bottom of this post!

OK, think of this news as less “fresh out the oven” and more “room temperature but still absolutely delicious” – Kiko Milano has opened in Hong Kong!

In case you aren’t familiar with the brand, Kiko is a pretty awesome cosmetics company from Italy, which boasts an absolutely gigantic range of makeup and skincare products (over 1600 at last count) at extremely affordable prices. Like everything that’s covetable these days, I became familiar with the brand on Instagram, where it’s beloved by beauty bloggers and “influencers” everywhere, whereupon I would coo and sigh and stroke my screen sadly that I couldn’t get my Kiko kicks in Hong Kong. Well, now I can!

L’Éclair De Génie review – you gotta rub me the right way

l'eclair de genie hong kong

*UPDATE: L’Eclair De Génie has now closed in Hong Kong*

How much is too much to pay for an éclair?

I’ll admit that’s not a question I’ve ever found myself wondering too much before, but it’s something you’re going to have to give serious consideration to when you visit L’Éclair De Génie – a Parisian dessert import à la Ladurée, which has recently opened two pop-up stores in Hong Kong.

Éclairs are the latest craze to hit Hong Kong… who knows why exactly, but it’s definitely got my sweet tooth a lot more excited than the recent burger/uni/Korean everything fads.

Nails Of The Day: Essie Dive Bar & Essie Shine Of The Times manicure

essie shine of the times

Over the festive period, I was lucky enough to be invited to quite a few Christmas parties – so I felt it only right to put slightly more effort into my look than my usual pyjamas accessorised with cookie crumbs down the front… so hello new mani!

For Christmas party number one, I went with Essie Dive Bar, an inky blackened teal – very cool, very rock n’ roll, but darkly sophisticated with it. It’s one of those intriguing polish colours that looks black from far away, but reveals glittering depths on closer inspection. It’s super easy to use; like most Essie polishes, it flows onto the nail beautifully and is pretty much opaque in one coat (although I always seem to do two out of habit). I did find it dried a little dull for my tastes though, so I added a slick of top coat to give it a glossier finish. Amazingly enough for a polish this dark, it doesn’t stain either so well done Essie.

Top 5 Desserts in Hong Kong 2015

Whilst everyone else compiles their lists of the best new restaurants in Hong Kong for 2015, I thought I might as well cut straight to the sweet stuff – literally! – with my favourite desserts of 2015 instead.

As you all know, my heart belongs to sugar – and done well, dessert should always be the highlight of my meal. This list was really easy to put together as these five dishes sung gloriously in my memory – and as you’ll very quickly discover, the quickest route to my affections is via chocolate, salted caramel and nuts… or even better, a combination of any of the above:

Chocolate palette, Neighborhood

This intimate little bistro by David Lai (of On Lot 10 and Fish School fame) is probably one of my favourite restaurants in Hong Kong in general… but there is nothing probable about my love of this chocolate palette. This IS my favourite dessert in Hong Kong full stop.

Face Of The Day: A Very Merry MAC Makeover

MAC Holiday 2015 makeover

What’s that faint ringing sound you hear? The approaching onslaught of tinny renditions of Jingle Bells being piped through every Hong Kong mall sound system for the next few weeks, that’s what!

Scrooge sentiments aside, C-Day is well and truly on its way – and with it, party season too. One of the most common questions I get asked as a beauty blogger in Hong Kong is where people can go to get a makeover session pre-party; it’s actually a service that quite a lot of the make-up counters here offer and just don’t advertise properly… but my default answer is always MAC! They have such a huge cosmetics range that covers pretty much every colour or product you desire, so can really give you the full works in any number of styles – and with over 20 locations throughout Hong Kong, there should be a venue that’s convenient for you.

MAC Hong Kong Face

Having been a devoted fan of MAC Cosmetics for many years now, I was invited to hand the reins over to the experts with my own 60-minute MAC make-up session – perfectly timed to showcase some of the newest products from their just-launched Holiday 2015 Magic Of The Night Collection. (Hint that will surprise absolutely no one: there might be a bit of glitter involved!)
