Beauty Spot: OPI Did It On ‘Em nail polish review

With summer well and truly ready to kick in over here, my body starts to crave brights – and my nails are no exception! So next up from the Nicki Minaj Collection is OPI’s Did It On ‘Em.

A lot of people commented on the similarity between Minaj’s collection and the Shrek one OPI put out a few years back – and Did It On ‘Em is basically the lovechild of Who The Shrek Are You (the Shrek green) and Fiercely Fiona (yellow). Basically, it’s a bright amped-up chartreuse… and my, how long I have been dying to use the world chartreuse!

If it was a cocktail, Did It On ‘Em would be equal parts lemon and lime. It’s pretty much the exact balance between the two, though it will lean almost totally lime under artificial yellow light or in the shade. Zingingly bright but creamy too, it kind of reminds me of 80s graffiti prints and I daresay it would look quite cool with an overall 80s throwback look; it also looks awesome clashed against other bright colours (very summer!) to shake things up. Probably the very definition of ‘ugly-pretty’ (oh God, I really do watch too much Next Top Model), it’s a colour that the more demure amongst you would deem “interesting”!

However, Did It On ‘Em was hell to apply. I don’t know if it’s because of the yellow in there (yellows in the polish world are renowned problem children) but it was streaky, chalky and uneven on. It requires at least three coats to get some semblance of opacity and even coverage; OPI’s usual magical self-levelling properties were much needed here! Yet eventually, I got the glossy vibrant chartreuse colour you see here… you can do it guys! Just errr… don’t look too close!

For me, Did It On ‘Em is the most Nicki Minaj colour of the entire collection – namely, you’ll love it or hate it. At the moment, I’m erring on the side of hate towards Minaj (I think turning up with a pretend Pope dressed as Red Riding Hood at an awards ceremony and thinking you’re cool or provocative for doing it has to be a new red carpet low) yet I think I ended up loving Did It On ‘Em. Purely because I got to use the word ‘chartreuse’ in a review, of course.

Beauty Spot: OPI Pink Friday nail polish review

Over my many nail polish reviews, you may have noticed a slight disparaging tone whenever pink is mentioned. Suffice to say, “traditional” nail polish colours just do not do it for me… save them for my wedding day I say (though I’m still not guaranteeing I won’t waltz down the aisle sporting some blingy-holo-flakie goodness!). However, I recently picked up OPI Pink Friday as part of their Nicki Minaj Collection set of minis, and in the interests of fairness and not wasting my money, I’m willing to try any shade once!

I actually received quite a few compliments on Pink Friday and I have to admit, if you like pinks, this is a really cute fresh take on the colour. Debates raged about what exact shade of pink to call it… it’s not fluorescent enough to be bubblegum, definitely not peach-toned enough for salmon, not bright enough for flamingo, nowhere near milky enough to be a pastel and I swiftly discovered that everyone has a different idea of what Barbie pink is! Nevertheless, it’s pretty close to MY idea of Barbie pink, so that’s what I’m going to call it!

Formula-wise, it wasn’t one of OPI’s greatest hits, unlike Fly from the same collection, which was top of the pops (liking the music references?!). It seemed a little chalky and streaky and was initially difficult to get a smooth even finish with. But after two to three careful coats, like many OPI polishes, it proved to be a great self-leveller and settled down to the smooth glossy milky creamiscle colour you see here.

Judging by the compliments, perhaps I should wear pinks more often… but Pink Friday wasn’t enough of a Eureka moment to change my mind. That being said, it’s not too sickly, is totally wearable and is actually quite pretty, which is more than I’d hoped for. I definitely wouldn’t team it with flounces, lace  or cutesy pastels, as I’m pretty sure that would tip it firmly into Lolita-Little Bo Peep territory!

My final verdict on Pink Friday? More an album track than single material; a cute Skipper rather than a beautiful Barbie. But totally bonza if you love your pinks.

Red Carpet Rundown: I ♥ Jennifer Lawrence

Over the past month, I have come down with an overwhelming fever… HUNGER GAMES FEVER. You’ve seen my mani, you’ve listened to my ramblings and now you must tolerate my love for Jennifer Lawrence too.

She was at a lot of awards shows circa her Oscar nomination for Winter’s Bone. She was a truly annoying Mystique in X-Men: First Class. And she’s dating Tony from Skins. Honestly, I never felt much towards her other than indifference. But come her casting as Katniss Everdeen, The Girl On Fire, and suddenly she clicked… To the power hundred!

Lawrence is phenomenal in the films… driven, hard, urgent, grounded, strong but vulnerable compulsive watching… but I’m here to tell you about my raging girl crush instead. Katniss Everdeen was always going to be a winning character if she was played right, but what I love about J.Law (as probably no one is calling her) is how awesome it was to see a real woman on screen. A woman who didn’t look anorexic, didn’t look plastic, didn’t look like she spends every waking moment in the gym refusing carbs, but a curvy, gorgeous, young woman with a natural fresh beauty and a magnetic screen presence. And my, has she worked some gorgeous gowns during the Hunger Games promo tour. As The Girl On Fire rightly should!

Prabal Gurung – This was the dress that kicked it all off at the world premiere in LA. Lots of people feel very passionately about the books and the characters, and even before I saw her performance, it was seeing Jennifer turn up in this blazing glittering golden gown that made me punch the air yelling ‘NAILED IT!’ This dress is a total look at me dress, it ensures everything is about her… as it bloody well should. My God, it is stunning, sexy, smoking, spotlight-stealing. But it was made even more perfect by being the absolute definitive outfit for a character known as The Girl On Fire.

And let’s just mention… hair intertwined with gold threads? Gorgeous. Cut-out back and side panels. Gorgeous. Beautiful smoky eye and nude lip? So so so gorgeous. The shot of her absolutely OWNING the entire red carpet just says it all (click it, enlarge it, make it your wallpaper). Sign me up to the cult, stick a mockingjay pin on me, I’m done.

Ralph Lauren – The gold theme was continued a little less successfully at the London premiere. It’s a beautiful dress, it shows off her figure winningly and I love that vintage-esque crackled texture of the fabric. It’s a little more subtle (if anything glittering and gold can ever be deemed subtle) for The Girl On Fire but let’s face it, anything would be a let-down after the Gurung.

BRUCIE BONUS shot of the cast, including obligatory WTF HE’S PEETA?!?!?! moment. Seriously, what are you wearing Josh Hutcherson?! Why do you look like a geography teacher from the 70s? And why are you so so short? (My friend also noted he has one little slightly squinty eye. I kind of hate myself for pointing this out to you all because once seen… can’t be unseen!!!) Note: Elizabeth Banks’ awesomeness will be addressed later.

Tom Ford – People were starting to get worried Lawrence would spend the whole promo tour in gold. This proved their worries were unfounded.

Jennifer instead went edgy for the Paris premiere in this slinky Tom Ford number. A simple LBD you may think… until she posed for the obligatory ‘back shot’ and unleashed a wow moment. Honestly, I wish she could have spent the whole event walking around like that (even if she does look a bit like Renee Zellwgere in that photo)! A super-sexy exposed back that still somehow manages to be understated; I just love the cut of it, it feels like a secret. And there’s that clever touch of gold thanks to the wink of the exposed zip. Meanwhile, sleek sexy hair and a slash of bright rep lippie totally sell the whole deal.

Marchesa – The Berlin Premiere marked a slight wobble in the love affair. This Marchesa dress was probably the most literal interpretation of The Girl On Fire but, like many  a misguided Marchesa moment, it’s overly-flouncy, staggering under too much detail, better in conception than execution and not really that flattering. And once someone on Go Fug Yourself pointed out it looks like one of those muscle-diagram photos from medical textbooks… cannot be unseen!!!

Raoul – And so we leave the glitz and glamour of the red carpet for the slightly more casual feel of the television promo circuit instead. For her arrival at the Letterman show, Jennifer went for this breezy Raoul LBD, nice but nothing spectacular. I do like how youthful it feels and that A-line silhouette and flippy skirt does emphasise what a banging bod she has – I may be cock-a-hoop that she has boobs and an arse, but there’s no denying what a teeny-tiny waist she has too! However, the things I love most about this look are her awesome blown-out glossy locks and those sexy lattice Jimmy Choo sandals.

Prabal Gurung – For the Late Show with David Letterman itself, it was back to bling… albeit in a more muted form… with this coppery-black matte sheath dress. Whilst I loved a lot of Jenn’s looks so far, this is the dress I actually want for myself. Sexy, trendy, understated and yay, sleeves! The whole black side-panel slimming illusion-effect thing has been done to death of late, but I love the way the coppery-lace detail seems to fade into the black and the matte finish makes it look altogether more classy and elegant.

The half-up half-down hair style is also very pretty, making what could have been a very sophisticated evening look seem a bit more youthful and daytime-appropriate.

Calvin Klein – Whilst the rest of her premiere looks channelled The Girl On Fire, I think that this dress for the New York one showcased a different side to Katniss (errr… I mean Jennifer). The forest-green colour isn’t often seen on the red carpet, but when you see it done as winningly as this, you wonder why! It feels earthy, sensual, soft and fresh and brings out Jennifer’s eyes beautifully. (I also get a minor gladiator vibe from the pleated skirt, which taken with the arena and tribute stuff in the book, totally works for me.) A super-flattering colour and cut make this another of my favourite outfits; OK, it’s a bit boob-ilicious but girlfriend looks hot.

Joie blouse, Holmes & Yang skirt – This is actually surprisingly one of my fave outfits of the bunch. Worn for her appearance on Good Morning America, it’s simple but classic – white blouse, navy skirt, red belt, tousled hair, winning smile. Anyone that can make Katie Holmes’ pedestrian clothes line look rather wonderful definitely deserves plaudits of some sort. It’s a little bit retro, a teeny bit nautical and a whole lot of awesome.

Victoria by Victoria Beckham – The final stop (for now!) was an outing in VB’s diffusion line at a Madrid fan event. It’s a very cute look; I’m not a particular fan of the dress itself, which feels like some ‘fashion’ attempt at a patchwork quilt, but it looks pleasant enough on Jenn… who as ever, is cute as a button.

Also, I know this post was meant to be a love letter to Jennifer Lawrence, but I have to mention Elizabeth Banks too. I’m no Banks fan (I think at one stage I consigned her to the trinity of meh, alongside Kate Bosworth and Rosario Dawson) but boy, did she step it up for this. Just as Lawrence channelled The Girl On Fire, Banks took the opportunity to infuse her style with a little of Effie Trinket’s zany fashions.

My favourite look is the zinging yellow of the Bill Blass dress worn for the London premiere; I mean, seriously, what a GORGEOUS dress. No other words required.

But I actually loved all her looks, even if I am sad she only made it halfway down the rainbow before the premieres dried up. Fluorescent orange Atelier Versace mini in LA? Delicious. Crazy cerise Marc Jacobs number (is it me or is this kinda holographic… and we all know how much I love me some holo action!) in Paris? Divine. Sequinned and stunning in a blazing orange Elie Saab in Berlin. Hell yeah! Respect, Elizabeth, respect.

And finally, a few more WTF HE’S PEETA?!?! moments for you. I did actually end up loving him in the film (near the end, where he catches hold of Katniss’ braid… swoon) but there was a point where I began to wonder if he was actually shrinking during this promo tour. Time to start doing some stretches in the hope you’ll grow in time for Catching Fire, young man!

Personally, I can’t wait to see how Jennifer Lawrence’s style develops in time for Catching Fire… how about you? And here’s that amazing photo again, just for good measure. If you aren’t stanning hard for her by now, I give up.

Beauty Spot: Nicole By OPI Nicole’s Nickel nail polish review

In the States, Nicole by OPI is apparently easier to get hold of than OPI itself. Not the case in Hong Kong! Its sole point of distribution here is Sasa – and even then, it’s a case of a limited number of colours in a limited number of Sasas… and as for new collections, forget it!

However, from these slim pickings, I spotted what looked like a pretty awesome glitter amongst the multitude of boring pinks and reds – Nicole by OPI Nicole’s Nickel, a Target exclusive in the States (whatever that means!). Call it the needle in the haystack, the wheat amongst the chaff or whatever other convoluted idiom you choose to come up with, Nicole’s Nickel is a winner.

Nicole’s Nickel is a super-dense glitter, definitely far too dense for layering as a top coat if you’re that way inclined. It consists of a dark charcoal base with tonnes of silver micro glitter and bigger round silver pieces, packed in tight like glittery sardines. The effect of the dark base piled thick with so much differently sized shiny silver awesomeness gives a stunning depth and texture to the polish, like chunky chainmail for the nails. Meanwhile, the colour becomes an antique pewter gunmetal that sparkles at you even in the blackest of midnights – it’s gorgeous.

Good job too, as it’s not much fun getting there. I have tried a Nicole By OPI polish before (the beautiful turquoise Diva Into The Pool) and not had any problems, but they’ve since changed their brush… to an utter monstrosity! The new brush is actually supposed to be easier to use since it’s tapered, but I found it short, squat and nothing short of a nightmare. Impossible to manoeuvre to make a nice neat line or to get stuck into the nooks and crannies of my nails, I guess my nails just aren’t tapered the right way!

Similarly, the formula isn’t great. Make sure you shake this up extremely well, as the base and glitter separate over time, and neither the glitter without the dark base nor the watery base without the glitter is a great look! [You need that base to create that fantastic depth of colour, and to make overall opacity a little bit easier.] And, like many-a-glitter, the formula is thick and it chips like a mother. I suppose a top coat would remedy that, but then you’d lose that awesome textured chainmail finish, which would be a shame.

But the overall awesomeness of Nicole’s Nickel just about makes up for its shortcomings. I love that it’s not such an obvious discoballs at dawn glitter, but rather something a bit darker, edgier, punkier and cool… which for something from Sasa (slogan: everyone’s pinking about us *balk*) is no small achievement.

So forget the small change, and hit the jackpot with Nicole’s Nickel instead!

Beauty Spot: Hunger Games mani and tutorial

Those of you who know me personally will know of a feverish obsession that has overtaken me the past month: THE HUNGER GAMES!!!

I read the books over a weekend and was unable to eat, sleep or shower until I had devoured every last page. I may have started crying and shaking when I got involved in a discussion about it. I even became gripped by a strange sort of Tourettes, whereby I would just randomly start shouting ‘HUNGER GAMES!’ to anyone on Twitter, Whatsapp and just passers-by on the street. Move over K.Mid, I’m all about J.Law now – KATNISS 4EVA!!!

Anyway, I managed to salvage something pretty out of the depths of my madness! In the books, Katniss is ‘The Girl On Fire’ and gets an appropriately fiery manicure to rock alongside a dress that bursts into flame. Inspired by this (and one of my fave beauty bloggers Eugenia from Ommorphia Beauty Bar), I decided to make one of my very first attempts at nail art in the name of THE HUNGER GAMES with my special Hunger Games manicure.

China Glaze’s Hunger Games Collection not being out in HK yet, I made do with whatever nail polish was in my stash to create my flame-encrusted look. I started with two coats of Becca’s Pasa Doble, from their new Balearic Love Collection. It’s meant to be a dark plum but at two coats, it’s a super-deep blackberry… and to all intents and purposes, total black! I’ve not tried Becca nail polishes before but the quality of this was great – opaque, glossy, quick-drying and long-lasting.

Next, I daubed on OPI’s Take The Stage (from their 2010 Burlesque Collection), a glowing gorgeous copper foil, onto the tips of my nails. The trick is to have as little polish as possible on the brush; swipe it heavily on the sides of your bottle to get rid of the excess and then lightly splodge it at the top of each nail; you’re aiming for an uneven fiery finish so no neat lines required!

I found a nice way to get an uneven finish was to carefully blot the polish with a thin tissue when it is still at that tacky stage of drying, giving the polish a sponged effect. Also, shake your usual polish routine firmly out your brain! Long flat strokes of the brush are simply not useful; I found the best way to stop my hands automatically doing this was to splay, splodge and dab the brush at the tips of my nails, rather than use that ‘painting’ motion.

Depending on how opaque you want your flames, you may want to repeat the process with a second coat of copper, applied in exactly the same way as the first.

Finally, find yourself a random gold glitter. Any will do and they are ten-a-penny; mine was a Jack Wills one that hasn’t seen the light of day since I trousered it (mainly for the cool Union Jack tin it came in) at their opening party. It’s best if you use one that is small glitter pieces suspended in a clear base (so the other colours of your mani show through), the less dense the better. Again, make sure you’re carrying as little polish on the brush as possible – hence why a less dense glitter is good, as you’ll have to swipe less off – and dab this on top of the copper. Concentrate on blurring the edge where the black and copper colours join; the random nature of how the glitter falls will make the line even more natural-looking and imprecise.

And there we have it! A fiery flame manicure that, even for a nail art novice like me, was pretty easy to achieve. I’m sure Katniss’ would have been more pro; mine are less defined flames and more the burning embers of the fire itself, but I’m still pretty happy with my efforts.

May the odds be ever in your favour!

La Creperie restaurant review – why every day should be Pancake Day!

Whenever my friend Mirander and I meet up, we fall into incredibly girlie stereotypes. We gossip, we shop, we eat desserts. You’ve already followed our expedition for high tea at Robuchon, but now for one of our favourite pit-stops… La Creperie.

Unassumingly tucked away on the first floor of some serviced apartments mid-way between Admiralty and Wan Chai, La Creperie is probably Hong Kong’s most authentic purveyor of French crepes – specifically buckwheat pancakes, galettes hailing from Brittany (thinner, larger, darker and crisper than the more conventional ones). Sweet, savoury, seafood, salad… they’ve stuffed them with anything they can get their hands on here… great news for greedy cochons like me, who can opt for crepes as both a main course and dessert!

The room is large and charming in a homely way, with well-worn dark wood furniture and a nautical theme in the décor (lighthouse salt and pepper pots!) that extends to the staff wearing Breton-striped shirts. Mirander and I always go off-peak, around 3pm, when the place is deserted – meaning service can be a little slow (especially as we always seem to find ourselves hidden behind a pillar) but that we can sit and gossip to our heart’s content!

For my main, I always go for Le Four. I just can’t look past any dish that has bacon as its main component! In addition to that deliciously salty shredded bacon, Le Four also contains a mix of slippery earthy diced mushrooms, some obligatory lettuce leaves to make me feel healthy and a creamy ultra more-ish sauce to totally cancel that out. This darling usually gets devoured in ten minutes flat; I just can’t get enough of the light crisp perfect accompaniment of wrapping all that deliciousness in a crepe brings – can I wrap all my food in one please?!

For desserts, Mirander and I fall into yet another girl stereotype – we order one to share. This means both of us get to feel better about halving our calories, whilst ensuring our orgasmic ‘mmmm-ing’ happens at the same time and neither of us get food lust for the other’s dish! There are so many scrumptious-sounding options on La Creperie’s menu, but again, we’ve never yet managed to look past La Defi, which comes topped with baby caramelised chunks of banana, a scoop of caramel ice-cream and lashings of salted caramel.

YES SALTED CARAMEL. I think I may have mentioned my love for salted caramel before. It’s salty, it’s sweet, it’s positively sinful. Gooey sticky unctuous love in liquid form… how could anyone resist?! And at La Creperie, they have that salty-sweet balance absolutely right. The banana’s natural mellow sweetness cuts in at just the right points, whilst the caramel ice-cream is soothingly creamily cool, helping the whole thing wash down with a serene soft sweetness and the occasional crunch of little nuggets of hardened caramel in there too. Heaven.

Savoury crepes clock in around the $100 mark, sweet ones around $50, with some very reasonable lunch and tea set deals available too. They also do a mean homemade lemonade, although alas their jars of salted caramel butter and sweets are no longer available (yes, I’ve tried to buy them, many-a-time!). And in the battle of the creperies between this and the similarly French-run Fleur de Sel in Causeway Bay, Le Creperie is a very easy winner for me – in terms of taste, atmosphere, service, price and pretty much everything else you can think of. I love that you can linger here comfortably for hours and no-one bats an eyelid, although I have heard it gets busy at dinner… so just do what I do an eat your dinner in the middle of the day! It’s also within tempting proximity of Sift Cupcakes, allowing Mirander and I the chance to indulge our girlie impulses even more!

So yes, Mirander and I are total girls. But when desserts, company and long lingering meet-ups are as good as this, I just love being a girl – don’t you?!

La Creperie, 1/F, Kui Chi Mansion, 100-102 Queen’s Road East, Wan Chai, Hong Kong, 2529 9280. Closed on Mondays.
