Monki see, Monki do! Monki Spring/Summer 2012 Collection

My story with Monki, the Scandinavian street-style sister brand to H&M, has been a potted one. But, and I’m going to spoil it now for you all, it’s one with a happy ending – completely down to Gloria, their superstar PR in HK.

When it first arrived in Hong Kong, I rolled up to their Mong Kok store excited at the prospect of something new (no Monkis in the UK back then!) – but I was hugely disappointed. Everything was black, baggy and oversized or black, cropped and oversized, there were far too many pairs of leggings for me to process and overall, the whole thing was far too fashion-forward for me. I scuttled back to H&M tail between my legs and vowed never to return.

I then wrote an article criticising Monki and wished Cos, another of H&M sister’s brands, would make the trip to the 852 instead. Enter Gloria, who went to the trouble of finding my email address, messaged me to say that she was sad that my experiences at Monki had been disappointing – but wondered had I been recently, as actually Monki had had a bit of a style makeover.  I took a look at the pictures and was amazed. Colour! Non-baggy! Not all leggings!

Then when my far more fashionable friend Iris came to HK, I found myself in Monki, actually shopping – and buying! – an amazing egg-yolk yellow dress which looked so awesome that a Mainlander saw me wearing it in the changing room and immediately ordered her mother to go find it in the store for her. (She looked rubbish in it though, what can you do?!)

And that’s how I found myself at Monki’s Spring/Summer 2012 press preview, a total convert!

Even though it’s still a little gloomy and grey here in Hong Kong, Monki’s Spring/Summer collection absolutely had me in the mood for COLOUR. It’s a delicious delectable range of clothes designed to get you in the mood for summer sunshine stat!

My favourite range of the new season was California Girl, a sorbet dream of peachy pastels, whimsical prints, light fabrics and beachy romances. It housed my absolute favourite item of the day – this gorgeous dress with a truly scrumptious strawberry and blueberry print.

Second favourite was Welcome To The Jungle, a fiesta of tropical prints that channelled Stella McCartney’s fruit prints from previous seasons. Fruity, tribal and totally summer. More about THAT parrot print jumper later!

There was also Nautical But Nice, a pretty self-explanatory theme that I feel we’ve seen very often but which Monki carried off with aplomb here. It’s anchors away with nautical stripes, bright reds and navy blues, and lots of maritime twists. Accessories in particular for this range are rocking – lots of cute bags, knotted belts and jaunty scarves.

Then there was Suprematism, a slickly-cut range of geometric and minimalist tailored nudes. Not my favourite (hence no photos) but a little reminiscent of Cos if you’re desperate!

For me, where Monki stands out this season are its accessories – a sheer wealth of treasures so reasonably-priced that you can afford to stock up and stack ‘em high!

I was obsessed with the printed scarves in particular and ended up with about five on my wish-list. See above!

Shoes were also chunky and eminently wearable looking, whilst I also loved a cheap and cheerful watermelon clutch – which I was delighted to then find in the goodie bag on the way home!

There were models there but, let’s face it, models look great whatever you throw at them. I was far more interested in how the ‘real people’ had styled their outfits. My girl Gloria was looking awesome in her green ensemble – no prizes for guessing what range that jungle-print blouse is from! I really love the brown lattice-belt that pulls everything together.

If I was let loose on Monki’s dressing-up box, I think Sandy’s look would probably be what I’d end up with. I love me some print knitwear, and this parrot-motif black jumper ticks all my boxes (another one that ended up on my wishlist!). Teamed perfectly with a bright complimentary colour-pop mini and a trusty pair of opaque black tights – with hair expertly swished over one shoulder! – put me down for this entire outfit please!

So for Spring/Summer 2012, Monki continues its irrepressible march into my good books! Fun colours and themes, quirky and unusual prints and all at prices that mean my wallet still has plenty of room to splurge on nail polish every other week – Monki here I come!

Beauty Spot: Illamasqua Raindrops nail polish review

I never bothered to do a list of my favourite beauty products for 2011… but if I did, this lovely would have been right up there!

Illamasqua’s Raindrops is a truly beautiful polish, which is absolutely true to its name – a bit of a rarity in the cute but crazy world of nail polish naming! A dusty pale blue jelly base with tiny iridescent flakies suspended within, Raindrops came into being thanks to an Illamasqua competition winner who was inspired by a photograph of raindrops on a windowpane.

The effect is astoundingly pretty and rather unique, in my collection at least. The light grey-blue jelly base is the colour of cloudy skies that carry a promise of blue ones to come; the flakies, rather than reflecting a load of rainbow colours, instead just have a shimmery iridescence to them… and the overall effect is almost exactly as you’d imagine raindrops trapped in a nail polish would be!

However, this stunning effect doesn’t come without a price. That dusty blue base is incredibly sheer – it took me three coats to build it up to opacity, although I’ve read of some bloggers needing many more! As a result, it also takes an absolute age to dry and I found myself forever banging and dinting it in the process; the positive to this was that it wore like iron, and I only experienced minor tip wear and no chips over seven days of wearing it. However, whilst that special flakie shimmer looks especially enchanting in real life (especially up-close), in photos, it kind of just looks like I’ve applied a dodgy base coat!

Forefinger & middle finger one coat; ring finger three coats; pinkie two coats

I also have to mention Illamasqua’s brush. The brush itself was fine from what I remember – pretty average, standard size and thickness, and it spread the polish well. However, I found the chunky square cap an absolute pain, difficult to hold comfortably and cumbersome to manoeuvre. Of course, I then realised this square bit pulled off! Like Chanel nail polishes, it reveals a smaller round ridged cap (as shown), which makes easy gripping a piece of cake! So don’t make the mistake I made!

But back onto what I love about Raindrops. Dusty blues slay me every time, and this is no exception! The colour is similar to China Glaze’s Sea Spray (another 2011 favourite) but with that lovely squishy translucent feel of a jelly finish. As for flakies – well, we all know how I feel about them! The combination of the two, plus that charming Raindrops concept brought to life? I’m in nail polish heaven, splashing happily through huge puddles of Raindrops, of course!

Raindrops also reminds me of a story my mum used to tell me. When she was little, she made up a story at school about the life of a raindrop – how it fell from the sky, danced and sloshed about with all its friends, ran down the windows and eventually evaporated away – and her story was so good, she got to read it aloud to her classmates and put it up on the classroom wall. Every time I look at raindrops on my window, I remember her childhood creation – and now I can get a wash of that feeling whenever I look at my nails too! Of course, Illamasqua could never have anticipated that – but I think it just adds to the beauty of this beautiful nail polish even more.

Raindrops keep falling on my head? Keep ‘em coming, I say!

Beauty Spot: OPI Steady As She Rose nail polish review

Aharrr me hearties! Yes, you’ve guessed it; I’m still slowly making my way through OPI’s Pirates Of The Caribbean Collection and today it’s the turn of OPI Steady As She Rose to join her mates Stranger Tides, Mermaid’s Tears and Planks-A-Lot on-board the good ship Through The Looking Glass!

The Pirates Of The Caribbean set is one of my favourite OPI collections… well, ever, really. I know a lot of people out there weren’t impressed that the colours were so un-Jack Sparrow like, but its range of dusty creamy pastels totally did the business for me – pirate-appropriate or not!

Steady As She Rose is no exception – although I’ll admit I didn’t expect to fall in love with it quite as much as I did! Pink has never been my favourite nail polish colour and I assumed this would be yet another boring pastel designed for the French mani and blushing brides market… but instead, what I got was an unexpectedly-beautiful and delicate lilac-leaning pale pink that had me smitten in seconds.

The other reason Steady As She Rose made quite such a speedy pirouette into my heart was its formula. OPIs can be a bit hit or miss in my books yet there is no denying how wonderful Steady As She Rose was; a beautiful glossy smooth finish, a stunning self-levelling formula and a dreamy opacity in two quick and easy coats. It’s worth noting that this was pretty much the case with all the Pirates polishes – scarily streaky first coat turns into lush creamy even colour by the second… so don’t be fooled by first impressions!

This is absolutely the kind of nail polish I love encountering – one that not only looks utterly gorgeous but actually surpasses your expectations. It’s a versatile mainstream colour, but thanks to that pretty lilac-leaning hue and dreamy dusty quality, just a touch unusual too.

Steady As She Rose is a delicate dusty delight, the colour of purple sweet peas or phloxs blowing in the breeze. Feminine but not overly girlie, this is the kind of pink I could definitely get on-board with! Who’s a Pretty Polly, then?!

Looks good with: florals, dusty pastels, ballerinas
Drying time: 3-5 mins
Coats required: 2
Chips: +5 days

Beauty Spot: Lush Jilted Elf shower jelly review

Before the Christmas season is entirely done and dusted, I wanted to share with you one of my favourite festive products from this year – Lush Jilted Elf Shower Jelly!

Showers are usually pretty mundane affairs but, as ever with Lush goodies, shower jellies bring a splash of fun to the bathroom! These are exactly what you’d guess from the name – super-squishy, wonderfully wobbly, jiggle monsters! Whilst the different types of shower jellies come in a rainbow of colours and scents, all feature seaweed gel as one of their main ingredients, which is chock full of natural vitamins and minerals to make your skin and hair feel super-soft. Some people use it as a shampoo or to shave their legs with, and you can even freeze it for future use; however, I just use it a shower gel and it does the job just as brilliantly than a regular body wash… but with a tonne more fun!

Jilted Elf looks exactly like that fluorescent green slime stuff that little boys love playing with and splatting against walls, doors and each other – call it shower flubber if you will! However, there’s a gorgeous sprinkling of gold glitter that saves it looking like it belongs in some deep-sea bog… but that doesn’t leave you looking like something sparkly from the Christmas tree post-shower either!

Jilted Elf was named after a cocktail the Lush team found in New York and is a suitably boozy concoction – a fruity Christmas cocktail of vodka, essential oils (including cinnamon, grapefruit and ginger) and an infusion of figs and honey. I know a lot of people find the scent of Lush products overwhelming but Jilted Elf’s is just beautiful; it’s relatively subtle (unlike the super-strong whiff of Glogg, Lush’s Christmas shower gel), rather sophisticated and just the right amount of intoxicating! It’s difficult to pin down exactly what it smells of – my nose determines it’s neither sweet, floral or musky before giving up and just settling on ‘gorgeous’ – and I absolutely love how the scent lingers on the skin after my shower.

Given the chance, these slippery so-and-sos will slip right out of your fingers and down the drain! So instead, pinch a little bit off (trust me, a little goes a long way!) and smoosh it into your shower puff; it immediately starts to produce beautifully-scented softening foam which you can then smother onto your body with abandon! You’ll find that you only need a tiny amount to get a good lather on (it’s amazing how much foam just a pinch of shower jelly generates) so this stuff lasts ages – good thing too because Jilted Elf is, sadly, a limited-edition festive special. Boo!

I think you’ll know how much I loved Jilted Elf by the fact that as soon as I took my first shower with it, I immediately rushed to Lush to stock up on a few more! It leaves my skin feeling silky soft, moisturised and smelling divine and is a really cute fun addition to my daily routine. Quite who could leave this baby at the altar is beyond me – Jilted Elf shower jelly is a definite keeper!
